Industrial heritage

The rich industrial heritage of the town of Anglès,
mainly related to mining and the textile industry, is still visible today.

The Burés steam engine

The Burés steam engine is one of the best-preserved machines of its kind in Catalonia and a key piece of Catalan industrial archaeology, which is why it has been recognised as an Asset of National Cultural Interest.

It is a stationary, or fixed, industrial machine equipped with a 200 hp (metric horsepower) Corliss engine and its iconic rotary valve system, which allowed for better thermal efficiency and lower fuel consumption.

The Burés machine, consisting of a boiler and a Corliss engine, was made in 1900 by La Maquinista Terrestre y Marítima in Barcelona. It has become an icon known worldwide thanks to its perfect state of conservation and working condition and because it is the only engine of its kind in Europe to still remain in its original location.

One interesting fact is that many workers wrote on the walls of the building, and some of these inscriptions are still visible today.

It must also be noted that the Burés factory steam engine has been preserved thanks to the actions of the Grup d’Estudis Anglesencs and, in particular, Mr Lluís Pont, who has been in charge of maintaining it for over twenty years.
