ANGLÈS, NATURE AND CULTURE

AN OUTDOOR ART MUSEUM

To walk around Anglès is to discover its history, through examples of its architectural and artistic heritage from medieval times to the present day.

The Gothic Route

The historic centre of Anglès is one of the oldest and best-preserved Gothic quarters in Catalonia. Gothic buildings coexist with other architectural styles that have shaped the appearance of the historic centre over the centuries.

Carrer Major and the adjacent streets (Carrer d’Avall, Carrer de l’Empedrat, etc.) are where the majority of the town’s historic buildings and Gothic stately homes are found.

On the same street, you will also find the Can Verdaguer arcade and other large Gothic homes renovated in the Noucentista style, such as Can Cendra and Can Camps.

The Art Nouveau Route

The Burés factory’s activity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries led to significant economic growth in the town, which resulted in the construction of new buildings in the Modernista, or Catalan art nouveau, style. Today, they make up a significant part of the area’s architectural heritage.

In the centre of Anglès, you will find the following examples of Art Nouveau homes: Can Cendra and Can Peix – both designed by Rafael Masó – Cal Farmacèutic, Can Gubau, L’Aliança and Cal Roig.

Attached to one of the houses on Plaça de la Vila is La Trona, the Art Nouveau transformer building left unfinished by the Electro-Popular company.

Remedios Varo Route

Surrealist painter Maria de los Remedios Alicia Rodriga Varo y Uranga, known as Remedios Varo, was born in Anglès in 1908. Most of her artistic career took place in Mexico, where she emigrated in 1941, fleeing from Nazi-occupied France. However, part of her work is linked to her memories from her early years in Anglès.

Her work is highly recognized and valued in America and is currently turning prominent in Catalonia. Her work was declared as Mexican Artistic Monument on December 26, 2001.

The Remedios Varo Route presents 21 points of interest indicated with information panels that establish a dialogue between the artist’s work and different spots in the town.
